Woke up this morning to snow...

Ice Storm

School closed for three days in a row.

Isn't that the funniest thing ever! This isn't the first time this dumb bird has tried to fly through the window! He's come at different times on different days! He doesn't learn his lesson!

Chocolate Celebration!

As part of the last day of "The Great Chocolate Caper"
we had a chocolate celebration: chocolate fountain AND chocolate samples from around the world......oh yeah!

The chocolate fountain table of goodies!

Italy: Bittersweet Chocolate. I'm not a huge fan of dark chocolate but this was really quite good.
Notice the 60% on the wrapper. Fine chocolates tell how much cocoa it contains. Some chocolates get away with being called chocolate with as little as 7% but the higher the number the better!

Croatia: Milk Chocolate with puffed rice. This was very light. It was like a rice cake covered in chocolate.

Croatia: Milk Chocolate with Biscuit. This reminded slightly of Hershey's Crunch bar. I love how HUGE these packages are! They are not just "King Size" they are more of the whole Royal Family Size!

Ireland: Butterscotch Milk Chocolate. This was delicious. One of everybody's favorites. A little toffee flavored crunch at the bottom of a smooth chocolatey top!

Switzerland: Dark-Noir Chocolate. This felt like the healthiest choice of the chocolate bars becuase it was 72% cocoa dark chocolate, AND had raspberry and rasins! I could taste the raspberry more than the rasins.

Germany: Smooth, creamy, oh so good! This was fabulous! Reminded me slightly of a really good piece of Dove chocolate. Notice the purple wrapping. One of my students was a child from Scott Air Base. Her mother is actually from Germany! She recognized the candy bar right away. She said that most all their chocolate bars have purple in the wrapping! If I understood the mother's accent correctly, one of her favorites had purple and white "cow spots" on it. I think it was mix of two types of chocolate.

Switzerland: Milk Chocolate. The richest, most delicious, smooth, creamy, milk chocolate ever. I've never had chocolate that compares!

strawberry festival

For the first time, I went to the Kimmswick Strawberry Festival with Mom and Dad.
It was a hidden treasure of strawberry deliciousness.

What a perfect way to enjoy was one of the most beautiful, warm, sunny summer days of the year.

There was nice breeze in the air. Bliss!

In addition to Kimmswick's many shops with antiques, collectables, and specialty items.
There were hundreds of stands selling handmade treasures.

There were young and old everywhere.
About five minutes after I took this picture, I saw two baby strollers with little doggies inside!
Had I been in California, it wouldn't seem as strange, but in southern Missouri...yeah....now I've seen it all!

The roads were all blocked off for the festival... quaint atmosphere!

Ride on the popular train anyone? (It was made for kids, but I always smiled when I saw adults sitting next to their kiddos on this little train)
I didn't take a photo... but you could also have rode a real camel! It was amongst the classic carnival rides.

moving update

Today I helped the school district move.
What a H-U-G-E project.
With all the volunteers we got a lot accomplished in a short amount of time.
I wish I had my camera to show the progress.
Since I didn't, visualize....
at least four trucks with wagons,
about seven two wheel carts,
people everywhere,
boxes everywhere,
hundreds of desks and chairs.
All loaded then unloaded into the gymnasium.
Whew!

It's time to update (past time; over time; about time)
Two big things in my life recently are moving classrooms and my new furnature.
Here are some photos of that. Enjoy!

about 60 total boxes... It's amazing how much stuff you discover you have when it's time to clean out and move.

Can we say "organized packer"? Yes, I labeled everything on all four sides. With every teacher from 2nd through 8th moving, I did everything I could to make sure nothing will be lost.

My desk bulletin board...bittersweet...I have a similar photo room bare like this and a very excited new teacher holding a stapler and border ready to hang the first thing.

No curtains, empty closets...

In the six years, I've used chalkboards, markerboards and SmartBoards....how learning technology advances!

I came across this quote last night, and I feel it is perfectly sums up memories from our younger years.

If somebody asked you about your first grade year, for example. You probably remember a random activity here or there, but you mostly remember that teacher's name and how she made you feel. You can label that teacher as a nice, mean, sweet, kind, caring, etc. but you can't remember the specifics.

This is perfect perspective for me right now. I love it when my fourth graders come back to visit and say "hi." However, after talking for a few minutes, they don't remember much about the little, daily things that that we did. They remember the year all colminated together--that overall feeling of that year in school.

My utlimate goal?
To make more positive memories than negative.
To instill a love of learning.
To have them remember it as a "good" year.
To know that I cared about them individually.

Greetings to all my blogging friends...my apologies for appearing to fall off the face of the bloggersphere for a while. I blink and all of the sudden it's been several many weeks/months since my last post.

In brief, my life's been a series of little things that seem too insignificant to write about in great detail. But when I look at them collectively, I rejoice in the Lord.

Holidays-Christmas, Birthday, New Year's (wonderful celebrations with family and friends)
Vacations-Michigan, Mom & Dad's, Christian retreats (welcomed breaks and rejuvenating)
Work-teaching (I'm never done...too much to do...too little time!)
Hobbies-cooking, gym, movies, tv, books, Biblestudy, computer time (finding that balance between work and play--great ways to destress)

All those small things, those little moments, everyday events, and mundane routines make life what it is. And life is good.

As Mother Teresa once said, "We can do no great things, only small things with great love."

Last night the Pioneer Woman shared her stories and answered questions for the fans in StL. It was so AWESOME to see her in person, hear her speak, and get autographs. I could go on and on about her and her blog...It all started with the blog. If you haven't visited the site, GO THERE NOW! http://thepioneerwoman.com/

She just finished publishing her first cookbook; now she's on tour. The cookbook's success and book tour has been bigger than expected. Fans are showing up and venues are more crowded than expected. It's so wonderful that a regular mother, wife, rancher, cook, photographer can achieve some fame and show the media that people in middle America support and love nice, wholesome people.

PW is a mother of four. Her two boys and husband were along last night. At one point the boys wanted to get mom's attention and take over the microphone!

Close your eyes and picture this.... Well, you can't read my ramblings and close your eyes at the same time. So, scratch that! Just picture this...

-little 1-foot American flags stuck in the ground approximately a yard apart proudly lining the sidewalks
-BIG blue paper letters spelling "Happy Veteran's Day" on a banner of red and white paper hanging from the ceiling
-oversized posters filled with thank-yous and comments by written 9-11 year olds
-wreaths of red, white, and blue stars lining hallways and doorframes
-more handmade American pride decorations everywhere you look
-patriotic music softly playing in the hallway

Okay, open your eyes. OH, they're already open...well, that image you created in your mind was my day at school today.

Yes, school was in session today. Veteran's Day. A lot of area schools and businesses are off on this holiday, but my district isn't. I admit, it would have been awesome to sleep in this morning, but sometimes you can honor the holiday in other ways.

We began the day with a moment of silence. Then a brief history lesson of the holiday was announced over the intercom. Teachers showed video clips about armed forces. We had class discussions about the topic. Veterans came by during lunch hour to visit with the children, and the children were given an opportunity to personally say "thank-you" and get to know them. Then at the end of the day, we had grade level assemblies, where three veterans shared their stories and answered questions. It was especially interesting for one of my students because his dad was one of the guest speakers! They asked kids to raise their hand if their mom, dad, brother, or sister was currently or recently had been active in armed forces. Gazing over the crowd of kids I saw several hands go up. A tear came to my eye as the dad shared how it was hard to leave his family, but he was so filled with pride to be a part of US army. They were very motivational and interesting speakers. One interesting particular thing that was said that I remember was that in all of the USA, only 3% are in the armed forces. That means 97% are not. What a wonderful thing to be in a free country. Thanks to those 3%. As long as the other 97% remembers the veterans we can continue to be the great country that we are currently.

At the end of the day today something happened that touched my heart... Background on the story: For Halloween we sent a care package to the troops over in Afganistan. It was filled with pictures, letters, and cards for the men and women serving over there. Thanks to technology, we received an e-mail letter back from the base saying that we brightened up their day. The page-long letter told all about what they were doing and where they were at (in kid friendly language) and even attached a photo of their artwork hanging on the wall in the base. The kids were so excited to find their projects in the photo. Well, we are planning to send another care package for Thanksgiving. We received word that the men and women over there were craving chocolote. So I have a little sign on my markerboard asking the kids to consider donating chocolate. So long story short (well this already a long story) the kids are donating chocolate. Not store bought unopened bags--but Halloween and classroom candy jar chocolate. One student set on my table three Reese's Peanut Butter cups and 2 mini Hershey chocolate bars that he pulled out of his bookbag. A few other students asked me to open the candy jar sitting on my front table so they could dig out the chocolate candies to add to the pile. Doesn't that just make your hearts melt? The kids are getting it. They are reaching out in the ways they know how to make a difference. That's what it's all about.

The next time you see a Veteran, say THANK YOU. Their work shouldn't go unnoticed.

*Last week I sang in church in a duet for the first time ever. I'm not going to lie, I was a little nervous, but it went really smoothly. Our voices blended really well. Also the song we sang fit in perfectly with the Gospel readings of the day.

Swine Flu

It's not a matter of IF you get it....It's the question WHEN?

Well...today I got the official word that one of my students has the Swine Flu.

Up to this point, I've had kids absent here and there but nothing out of the normal. However, once one student is diagnosed, it seems that the germs spread quickly and everybody's staying home with the flu. Some of the teachers I work with have had 8-10 out all in one day!

So, yes, I'm taking extra precautions... My "Tidy Tuesday" is not just going to be a once-a-week event. Today the kids jokingly said today was "Washing Wednesday"!

We're Lysol/Clorox wiping desks.
I'm encouraging GermX.
And of course, handwashing is a must.

At home I'm drinking lots of water.
I'm trying not to get run-down.
And I'm praying to stay as healthy as I can.

Other flu-related melisms...
*Last night at Bunco, I heard some ladies say that the Swine Flu is not new. It was a big problem in the 1970s as well. That sparked my curiousity bug (no pun intended). Does anybody know about this?

*It's hard missing a day of school. Missing several days of school...oh man...all that make-up-work! We do so much in a day! It's hard to get caught back up BUT please, please stay at home. Often kids get sent back to school before they're healthy, and then they expose more kids---it's just a vicious cycle!

Another thing to make with Ranch Dressing Mix...

Yes, I know I've blogged about this before, but today I got another recipe that uses the infamous Ranch Dressing Mix.

I just had to share.
We had a food day at work the other day, and it was so yummy, I ate a cracker with this spread on top. Then I had another. And another. Yummm...

So, being the food lover I am, I asked for the recipe! Here it is. It's pretty simple to make...

Ranch Cheese Ball
1/2 c. sliced almonds
2 (8oz) pkg. cream cheese, softened
1 pkg Ranch Dressing Mix
1/2 c. green onions, chopped.
Assorted crackers.

Toast almonds for 4-6 minutes in 350 oven. Cool. Set aside.

Combine cream cheese and dressing mix until blended. Stir in onions.
Gather cheese into a rough ball. Gently roll in nuts until coated. Wrap in plastic.

Refrigerate for 2 hours or overnight. Serve with crackers.

MMMMmmmm.....see I said it was easy!

We've all heard the adage, "What's popular isn't always right."

Today in Bible class we looked at the story of Elijah and the Prophets of Baal.
--See 1 Kings 18 "Elijah on Mount Carmel"--

One question posed by Pastor was, "While democracy may be a fine tool for public governance, what does 1 Kings 18:22 suggest about the validity of democracy when it comes to theology?"

Humm....
Basically in this Sunday School story there's a King named Ahab and a Queen named Jezebel.
The people of Isreal have strayed and are following the false gods Baal and Asherah.
There are 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of Asherah.
AND only ONE prophet of the Lord--Elijah.

If put to a vote (democracy in action 850:1) it would overwhemingly appear that the idol Baal is Lord. Which we all know isn't right, and Elijah goes on to prove this at Mount Carmel.

Remember, what's popular (idolatry in this case) isn't always right.

small dilemma

I love to crochet. Once my hands get the feel for a pattern, the movements become effortless. It's so relaxing to sit in front of the television with some yarn and a hook. The "blooming afghan" pattern is my favorite. Blue, brown, pink, more brown...I've made so many I've lost count!

My latest crochet project has been worked on off and on whenever I felt like being domestic. I haven't been as diligent working on it as I have with afghans of the past, but this one doesn't have a deadline or an owner yet, so I've just crocheted at a leisurely pace. I've put it down and picked it back up several times over the past year or so. Since school has started back up, crocheting has been my way to unwind after a long day or long week. I've been crocheting like crazy. The end of the afghan is in sight. I'm almost finished. Just a few more rows, and it's complete.

OR SO I THOUGHT.....

It all began a few Christmases ago. I bought a bunch of holiday yarn on clearance. I simply fell in love with the deep colors of Red Heart wine/gold and Red Heart aran/gold yarn in an aisle at Wal-Mart. I had to buy it. I had to make something with it. So I searched for a new pattern to try and found this one:

It quickly became fondly referred to as the "candy cane afghan." So, now....I'm in a bit of a dilemma.... Yes, I bought a bunch of yarn, but NOT ENOUGH RED! Argh! Yikes! It's time to go shopping! I haven't searched the stores or on-line yet, but I'm hoping in the coming months this holiday yarn will miraculously reappear! Until then, this project is on an indefinate hold. :( what will I do now?

I love the feel of a brand new toothbrush...

...A new fun color to brighten up the morning, afternoon, and night!

The past few days I've gotten a new perspective on teeth brushing. Yes, I said it. You can call me crazy, but hear me out.

Earlier this week, there was a rupture in a water line. So the entire county was on a boil water order.
That meant a special phone call from the school to remind families to pack bottled water for their children. Trashbags were secured over the drinking fountains. Resturants couldn't serve ice or fountain soda. And free water bottles galore at the gym.

Being a good healthy citizen, I abided by the boil water order. Let me tell you....it stinks! You don't relized just how often we use potable water until you can't have it. No more quickly washing off fresh fruits and veggies--yes, I most definately changed my dinner plans that night and the next day! AND have you ever tried to clean your toothbrush and brush your teeth using water from bottled water instead of a faucet?! It definately takes the fun out of the teeth brushing process! I am so thankful that we live in a country where we have good, clean water available aplenty!

So, today I decided to open a new package and replace the old brush. Get rid of those potential bad germs and start fresh. So just a friendly reminder to all my fellow bloggers out there:

1. count your blessings that you have clean water
2. change your toothbrush now and then

TGIF!

It's been quite a week. We are working very hard already—summer vacation is becoming a fantastic memory as we dive into all of our fourth grade studies. I'm really looking forward to this year! The students seem like a terrific bunch of kiddos! Plus, Parent Orientation had a good turnout. :)

AND......

I'm piloting a new textbook curriculum called Everyday Math. So far, I'm LOVING it!

I could go on and on about the positives of this program, but I'll focus on one aspect for now...Games.

I've always been an advocate of hands on activites in math and making math fun. In fact, the past five years, my Christmas present to the students has been a "Fun with Math" packet including game instructions and the supplies needed to play them. The first week of school, I always explain to parents that if their child comes home and says, "We're playing with cards and dice in math," that I'm NOT teaching them poker or something. Rather, games are a great way to practice math skills and have fun at the same time. Often the students get so wrapped up in the fun that they forget that they're learning at the same time.

Finally there's a program who puts this philosophy into its daily lessons. Everyday Math has a plethera of "games" to do with the students as they are learning concepts. Math has always been my favorite subject, and now I like it even more (if that's even possible!)

Candles

Candles.
They are great decorations.
Some smell wonderful.
Some smell yummy.
Some smell icky.

Often one hears stories of accidental fires started from candles. So for several years, I refused to burn them. Now I'm a little braver, and I've started to enjoy the ambiance of a burning candle now and then but I much prefer the ones in a "jar." They feel safer to me.

A friend of mine mentioned that she loves fall. The beautiful colors, the home decorations, and the seasonal candles. Pumpkin and pear are autumn only candle scents.

I was at Wal-Mart and smelled the pear candle. Wow. It is blissful.

Yes, I broke down and bought one. I just couldn't pass it up.

I challenge you next time you go shopping to swing by the candle aisle and take a wiff. Ahhhh....Waft the spiced pear sensation to your nose and smile. Autumn is on it's way.

Spinning Shoes

About a year and a half ago (almost two years) I started spinning/cycling class at the YMCA.

I'm hooked. To quote a friend, "Oh you're one of those people." Yes I am. I love it. It's a great workout. The music makes the time go by fast. My instructor is great.

Up until last week, I went to class wearing my regular tennis shoes. I'd strap my shoes into the "cages" on the foot pedal. Most of the regulars had special shoes, but I thought that I'd wait and see if I really was dedicated enough and liked it enough to make the purchase. When I'd talk to people, they would rave about the benefits of wearing the shoes. I was a little skeptical at first, but the more I heard it, the more I wanted to try it out for myself.

So, I finally took the plunge. I went to the cyclery store and got my feet measured (I don't ever remember having a salesman measure my feet before! Sidenote, I'm a size 37--yeah, they don't come in US sizes).

To wrap up the story--I LOVE the new shoes. AND I've seen amazing results in my numbers during class. Case and point...

last class with old shoes: I biked 17 miles; 300kcal

first class with new shoes: I biked 18.4 mi; 428kcal

Yeah! Going approximately the same distance, I was able to get the watts up higher and burn over 100 extra kcal. Now I can see how people are getting up to 500 kcal in a class. Before, I was curious how they did it! I think the shoes are key! ;)

I do wish that they would've had the black shoes in recessed clips--but oh well. I didn't want to order them or wait for them to be shipped from some other store. When he measured my foot--the salesman was like "wow you have tiny feet" and I was thinking "oh no! they won't have any in my size" but thankfully they did have two pairs. I picked the black onces with a little pink.

Summer Food

Summertime! Happiness! Warm weather! Fresh produce!

CUCUMBERS...I tried making cucumber sandwiches. (I've never made them before, but I had sampled this tasty appetizer for the first time at a Superbowl Party. I'm not sure if this is how they made them, but this was my recipe... John and Kelly if you're reading this, let me know how your recipe compares!)

Blend cream cheese and ranch dressing mix.
Spread on rye bread.
Top with thinly sliced cucumbers.
Here's a photo of the rye bread...the sandwiches were all gobbled up before I thought to take a quick photo!

TOMATOES! I love tomatoes from the garden. Slice them and eat 'em plain. Make BLT sandwiches! Salads! Mmmmm....
Well, since I had leftover cucumber slices, I mixed them with diced tomatoes and Italian dressing and walah! Cucumber salad! (For those of you who make cucumber salad with vinegar, definately try Italian dressing instead. It gives it a great tasty zip and is way easier!

PEACHES! Peel off the fuzz and juicy deliciousness is in your hand.
I had some extra peaches, so I tried making a peach pie with a lattice crust on top. The lattice surprisingly wasn't too hard to do.

Dry Ranch Dressing Mix---I've been finding out that it's almost as popular in the kitchen as salt, flour, and sugar. It seems to be popping up in recipes a lot lately ...cheeseballs, veggie pizza, breaded chicken, and now
bacon pinwheels!

Ingredients:

2 cresant rolls

2 cream cheese

1 pkg. dry ranch dressing mix

1 1/2 pkg. Real Bacon pieces

2-3 green onions, chopped

Mix cream cheese, ranch dressing, bacon pieces, and onion. Spread out cresant rolls into big rectangle. Spread mixture on top. Roll long ways; pinch seams together. Wrap in seran wrap; freeze 10 min (when it's colder, it's easier to slice the roll). Bake 10 minutes or until golden brown.

Boomerang

Today I got to experience something I’ve never seen before—a boomerang tournament.
A colleague of mine mentioned it at the end of the school year. Her husband has thrown boomerangs competitively for over 20 years now.

I was intrigued. I had never heard of such a thing before. So, I went to see it for myself.

Today there were 22 competitors/friends from all over the US. It was so interesting just to learn about it and watch for a little while.

Things I learned…
~There are a lot of different shapes and materials for boomerangs
~The boomerang must fly at least 20 meters for the throw to count.
~There is a definite mathematical science to throwing boomerangs. (Think Mensa members turned athlete.)
~Boomerangs are competitively thrown in five different events:
1. Trick (throwing left-handed, right-handed, under the leg, etc.)
2. Accuracy (The thrower stands in the center of a bullseye and tries to get the boomerang to come back to the point where he/she is standing.)
3. Australian (points awarded for distance, accuracy and catchability)—I got to watch this event.
4. Maximum Time Aloft (Evidently boomerangs can stay in the air for several minutes if they catch the right wind currents; sometimes they are even lost—up, up, and away!)
5. Fast catch (an endurance event)

Needless to say it was a neat afternoon. One I won’t forget.

Five Years

Well, it's the end of another school year…
The classroom is packed up, the key is turned in, and the students are off to have some summer fun. As for me, I’m super excited to get some sun and be rejuvenated.

This post is to take a quick moment and reflect. I truly do love teaching. I’m so blessed to get to do something that I love so much for a career. There have definitely been ups and downs, but overall I wouldn’t trade it for anything. This year marks a milestone in my career. I received my five year pin. Wow! Five years of service to the district. Where did the time go?

Looking back...
-125 students can call me their fourth grade teacher
-500 report card comments
-2 principals (well, technically two, but I count three)
-3 different front wall boards: first chalkboard, then markerboard, now Smartboard
-1 classroom (I’m one of the lucky ones who hasn’t moved)
-12 Masters classes
-5 curriculum changes (yes, I can now say that every subject/textbook has changed since the day I was hired)
-countless recess duties, holiday parties, papers graded, meetings attended, and late nights.

Sitting in the new high school building at the end-of-the-year recognition luncheon, I couldn’t help but smile and wonder, “What’s in store for the next five years?” We’ll see! That’s an exhilarating concept! Hopefully I’ll be like my colleague Patsy, who received her 30 year pin this year and still inspires students to love learning! Now that’s a goal!

Hat Girl

It's insteresting how certain fashion styles come back after a few years. For example, bell bottoms were popular in the 70s and then again in the late 90s. Maybe it's time for hats to have a comeback. I'm not speaking baseball hats, but the fashionable ones where you get hat boxes and everything. Wouldn't that be something!

Today I pulled out the patio lounge chair, grabbed a book, and settled in to enjoy the GORGEOUS day. As I was reading, my sunglasses just weren't enough...so I had a crazy thought...I grabbed a baseball cap to shield the sun.

Okay...as you probably already know, I've never been a "Hat Person," [sidebar...I only own one hat--a Gateway Grizzles cap that was the free giveaway at the game. (well...unless you count the birthday sombrero that I got years ago--which I think is in mom and dad's basement?)]

I admit, it was a lazy Sunday afternoon, and I got a little camera crazy, but I had fun. Maybe I'm a hat person after all!

I have a "chef guy" calendar, but the makers of this Lang product insist on throwing in a rooster here and there. I'm sorry, but if you create a chef guy calendar, why devote a whole month's picture to a rooster rather than the chef guy?!?! I hate it so much that it's become a joke. I always look for the "rooster month" in the calendar.
Well, I was so excited to change from April to May to say, "Goodbye rooster!"
Only to shockingly exclaim, "You've got to be kidding me!"
Yes, that's right, the month of May is ALSO devoted to a rooster! Two rooster months in a row! I can't help but laugh! I guess that being born in the Chinese Year of the Rooster has more than one meaning for me! :)

Antz

Be warned: Animated and PG Ratings aren't automatic indicators that the movie is "Safe" for kids. It's really sad.

Today I watched the movie Antz. Here's my movie review and thoughts:

~Turning it on, I knew nothing about the movie other than it was an animated one that I haven't seen. I love animated flicks (yes, my dream is to be a Disney animator).

~I read the Netflix quick summary and learned, "In this animated hit, a neurotic worker ant (Woody Allen) in love with a rebellious princess (Sharon Stone) rises to unlikely stardom when he switches places with a soldier (Sylvester Stallone). Signing up to march in a parade, he ends up under the command of a bloodthirsty general (Gene Hackman) who's leading a war against a termite army. The all-star cast includes the voices of Anne Bancroft, Jennifer Lopez, Christopher Walken and Danny Glover. "

~I was puzzed by the title "Antz" why not call it "Ants" (why does the media purposely choose to spell things wrong?) After watching the movie, I do have to admit that I LOVE the purposeful misspelling. The movie is about an ant named Z!

~I love the name "Insectopia" (it reminds me of shoetopia and flowertopia---the islands I create for my students each year during our map-making fun)

~At the beginning of the script, the ants are bringing their ant babies to get their vocation determined. It brings up an interesting concept of having your future determined for you and tracking kids at a very young age into that profession.

~The plot takes on interesting topics such as individualism, conformity, and teamwork.

~OKAY, BUT THE REAL REASON I'M BLOGGING ABOUT AN ANIMATED MOVIE....
I WAS HORRIFIED BY THE AMOUNT OF "mild language" THAT WAS IN IT.
(The PG rating was for "mild language and menacing action." PG meant it was "ok for kids 8+")
I'm sorry but movie makers do NOT have to include certain words in a show whose primary audience is kids. You can still get across the point that he was a "bad guy" or "really mad" without using choice phrases. After watching the show, I went to screenit.com (great movie site--it can tell you lots!) and here's what I mean...

According to screenit,
there are at least 4 damns, 2 hells, 2 craps, 1 ass and 2 uses of "Oh my God" as exclamations.
AND it includes these phrases that kids could imitate: "Geez," "For crying out loud," "Come hell or high water," "Idiot," "What are you bitching about?," "Losers," "Nuts" (crazy), "Let's kick some termite butt," "Creep," "Twerp," "Bite me," "Bagging" (other ants talk about Z "bagging" Bala), "Buzz off," "Who the hell is that?," "Tight ass," "Freak" and "Ungrateful maggot."

YEAH. I DID A DOUBLE TAKE ON A FEW OF THOSE! I ASKED MYSELF, "DID THEY REALLY JUST SAY WHAT I THOUGHT THEY SAID?!?!?" (and me being the nerd that I am, I'm watching it with closed captions, so it confirms my disbelief.)

~Call me old fashioned, call me a prude, call me overly sensitive, but I was offended. If I was a parent, I would seriously consider the film's appropiateness. I know kids hear much worse and are exposed to much worse, but I wouldn't feel comfortable showing this in my classroom. It's sad.

~Bottom line: it's unfortunate that animation can be morally questionable entertainment. Look at the Simpsons. Look at Family Guy. Those are animated, but definately directed toward adults, not kids.

Lemonade 25 cents

Remember the days of lemonade stands?

Today as I got home from work, I saw that the neighbor kids gathered together and became little entrepreneurs. They had ice, cups, and of course...lemonade!

I visited the little stand, complimented their business, and headed back across the yard with a cup of yellow yumminess.

Those kiddos reminded me just to enjoy life and remember the quote: "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade." Life is good. Find the positive. Try not to stress.

Red Cabinet

For Christmas, my wonderful brother and sister-in-law gave me the gift of helping redecorate/rearrange a room in my duplex. They have the best eye for things! I LOVED their help---the office is now my favorite room in the house!

While shopping for accent pieces, we ran across a red cabinet.

I love red.

It was cute.

I thought I might want it.

It was out of stock.

I forgot about the little thing.

It finally came in-two months later.

I now have a new cabinet in the kitchen!

It fits just perfectly!

Filled with my ever-growing cookbook collection, this little piece looks like it's been there for years.

Multitasking

Multitasking is a popular word in today's culture.

I was just reading an article about it... and two quotes caught my eye.

Melism...interesting...our brains working in rapid linear succession. I like the phrasology!

Melism...I agree with this one--not always a time-saver. Projects that shouldn't take very long at all become an all night affair when watching TV! Granted, I always watch tv and do SOMETHING...(thanks, mom). But I do believe that we'd all be much more efficient if we focused on one task at a time...especially when multitasking (alternating between) two larger, more cognitive tasks.

Over the weekend, Paul Harvey died. "...and now you know the rest of the story" was his famous line after telling a story.

Also over the weekend, I was at a trivia night where one of the categories was religion. I knew most of them...but one question really got me thinking. The answer was Isaiah. My team guessed correctly, but it was most definately a guess.

As children in Sunday School we hear all the famous Bible stories, but as adults we see the human sides of these great prophets, and it's interesting to hear the "rest of the story." The awesome thing is WE CAN hear the rest of the story. Open the Bible and read; go to Bible study and learn. The more I learn, the more I want to learn. I guess ultimately that's God's plan...so we can develop a closer relationship with Him.

Wouldn't "Sunday School Lessons...The Rest of the Story" make a GREAT Bible study series. Somebody needs to get working on that!

Best Trivia Night Ever

I love Trivia Nights. Over the past few years, I've attended quite a few. It's really popular around this area. In fact, there's one on my calender every weekend for the next month!

Sometimes we are just there to eat, drink, and have a good time. Other times I've been on winning teams and really put out 100% effort to win. BUT I have to say this one tops the list. There was a table decorating contest. People went all out! There were pirates, construction workers, Hawaii, party tent, superheros, 80's outfits and much more!

We were the NINJAS! It was so much fun.---and an easy costume--complete with dollar store weapons! Check it out!

Oh, and of 25 tables we placed 4th. :)

the first signs of spring...

Today we got a hint that warmer weather is on the way! Yippie!
The snow started melting and I think temperature had a high in the 60s.
I'm finished with winter; bring on spring!

Also today, my Apple Blossom Amaryllis (ABA) went into full bloom!
It's sooooo pretty!

Here's a little biography of ABA...

It all started inside a Christmas gift.

Upon arriving home, ABA was ready to be potted.

But first we needed to "grow" some soil.

POOF! Add a little water; instant soil!

Now ABA was ready to take root.

After a few weeks of basking in the sun, ABA reached for the sky.

Two Days of Unexpected Fun...

Snow days are wonderful things.
In my front driveway, check out the total accumulation...

This year for Christmas I asked for a snow shovel.
I know, amazingly lived here for 5 years and just now decided I should own one.
Anyways, this morning I contemplated breaking it in. Note, that I thought about it, but I decided to wait until later in the day. While reading in the living room, the doorbell rang (yes, it is fixed). Two guys were going door to door offering to shovel driveways for $20 each. I love living in town!
Here's the end result: the driveway is clear and my Christmas shovel is still clean in the garage!

Book Review

I just finished reading The 13th Juror by John T. Lescroart.

Good book.

Basic story...a woman is accused of killing her son and husband. She pleads not guilty, but it's hard to prove. The story goes through the trial, with well developed characters, and a twist at the end.

I recommend. :)

Movie Review

Have you seen the movie Facing the Giants?
Go rent it.
It's a mediocre football movie with a major Christian message.
What's most impressive is when you watch the commentary and learn that congregational members created it with one camera (learning the tech stuff as they went), a low budget, their real school as the setting, their real school uniforms, and with their real high school football team and community members as actors.

I heard that that "Fireproof" is an awesome movie also by them. It's not out on DVD yet.

Ice Cream

Yesterday as I was sitting in my living room, I heard the familiar carnival tune that could be none other than the ICECREAM TRUCK. Seriously. Ah...the simple things in life. Enjoy them!

I love living in Waterloo. A place where there really still is an icecream truck that kids go running out to meet. It's small town America next to "big city" St. Louis. I didn't buy anything this time, but I have in the past.

Time for a quick movie review...
Have you ever seen the 2006 movie Akeelah and the Bee?
I just finished watching it, and I have to say if you've never rented it, add it to your list of movies to see! Yes, there's a predictable story line, but it was an inspiring little film.

Anyone who really knows me, knows that spelling is NOT my best subject. Play Scrabble? Crossword puzzle? Boggle? Forget it! Give me a Sudoku or logic puzzle any day. Teaching has really helped me become a better speller, but I'm still VERY thankful for computer spell checks!

Earlier this year, I was flipping through the channels and saw the National Spelling Bee on TV. After a few minutes, I was surprisingly hooked. For the first time that I can remember, I actually sat down and watched the people spell. I was amazed how they asked for definitions and origins of the words. Soon I found myself grabbing my enormous dictionary to see if the words they were saying were actual words! (yes, I admit it, I own one of those three-inch thick dictionaries!) I have to say that for an American-English spelling bee, they sure did use a lot of foreign words. After watching that, my family suggested I see this movie. It follows the story of a girl who competes in spelling bees. It took me a while to take your advice, but I'm glad you suggested it! Thanks!

Yours truly auditioned for and got a part in the upcoming musical.

Granted, my part is "adult singing chorus," but for my first production I didn't expect anything bigger than that. I'm so excited!

The past few days, I find myself flipping on the tv more and more to see how the gymnastics and swimming are going...and before I know it, it's late into the night. You can't help but be excited and cheer on athletes like Shawn Johnson, Jonathan Horton, and Michael Phelps to name a few.

Okay...as you may have noticed there are three blogs in a row that are about crayons.

I took a quick on-line quiz and it told me the color crayon that best fits my personality. (I always loved doing these in teen magazines!)

Yellow: The first time I took it, I answered as truthfully as I could about myself and when yellow came up, I read the description and said, "Yeah, I guess that's me."

Red: The second time I took it, I answered again truthfully but picked some of my "second choices" on the multiple choice options...on several I was debating between a few. I was excited to see red come up (my favorite color) but I felt the description didn't fit as closely to me.

Purple: The third time I took it, again I answered truthfully but picked a happy medium between my answers of the first and second trials. After reading that description I think that's me, but then, if you look carefully purple and yellow are opposites, so...am I a walking contradiction?

I was sitting in my living room, watching tv and working on the never-ending stack of papers to grade when I heard something funny. It sounded strangely like Christmas music, then a "Ho Ho Ho....Merry Christmas!"

I look out my front door and there's a live Santa Claus waving and sitting on what looks like the Waterloo German Band's float bandstand! So I waved back and quickly grabbed my camera for some quick snapshots (to prove it really happened!). Sorry they are so blurry---I was just so excited (and shocked) to see the jolly old fellow![One other time several years ago I had a similar experience...but in the summertime...I heard jolly music and wondered what it was... clowns? the circus? nope. It was the oldfashioned icecream truck traveling around the block! Yippie!]

The Energizer Machine

Ever want to feel like a hamster running in that "wheel"??? Running, running, running, around, and around...

Well, today I went to the St. Louis Science Center. They have an exhibit called the "Energizer."

As we run, we supply the kinetic energy needed to power this three-story-tall kinetic sculpture.

Walking a treadmill (hamster wheel) sends colorful balls tumbling throughout the entire lobby in spirals, funnels, loops, and slides. It's pretty cool....and a great workout!!!! (Yes, I really did try it out. I felt like a little critter running, and running, and running. Whew!)
